The National Organic Standards Board, which sets the standards growers and processors must meet in order to achieve organic certification, as declared that oxytetracyline, a commonly used antibiotic, may no longer be used in the production of organic apples and pears.

Patty Lovera, the assistant director of Food & Water Watch, believes the change is appropriate. She said,

"If organics is going to market itself as a more responsible type of agriculture, then they need to live up to it."
