Five animal rights groups including the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) along with five individuals have filed a federal lawsuit seeking to overturn a recent USDA decision to approve a horse slaughterhouse in New Mexico. The lawsuit raises questions about the suitability of the horses for human consumption, alleging they
"are not raised in regulated industries conscious of public health and safety concerns, but rather in private homes, on racetracks and as working animals."
