Once-Shuttered Pork Plant Ready to Expand Again

RANTOUL, Ill. (AP) — An eastern Illinois pork processing plant that closed in 2009 amid financial troubles is getting ready to expand.

Rantoul Foods President James Jendruczek (JEN'-druh-zek) tells The News-Gazette in Champaign that the facility plans to build a 48,000 square-foot expansion. Construction should start next spring. Rantoul is about 15 miles north of Champaign.

Rantoul Foods bought the plant from farmer cooperative Meadowbrook Farms after it closed in 2009.

The plant reopened in 2011 with 150 employees.

Rantoul Foods says it has already expanded the plant twice since it reopened in 2011 and now employs 460 people.
