Defending the city's recent ban on large, sugary sodas, City Health Commissioner Thomas Farley argued that the growing obesity crisis forced the city to take drastic measures to address public health risks. An attorney for groups challenging the ban disagreed. Attorney Richard Bress said,
"For the first time, this agency is telling the public how much of a safe and lawful beverage it can drink. This is the government coercing lifestyle decisions."
