New Jersey Governor Chris Christie vetoed a bill that proponents say would have provided more humane housing for pregnant sows. The bill, which passed the N.J. Senate by a 29-4 margin, would have outlawed the use of gestation crates on pig farms in the state. The National Pork Producers Council celebrated the veto. Its President-elect Dr. Howard Hill said,
“This is a great example of a governor standing up to powerful lobbying groups on behalf of small, independent farmers. America’s family hog farmers thank Gov. Christie for rejecting this bad legislation.”
