CASS CITY, Mich. (AP) β€” Plans are in the works for a $40 million milk processing plant in Michigan.

Dairy Farmers of America broke ground Thursday at the site in Cass City, located in Michigan's agricultural Thumb region.

The national dairy marketing cooperative says the facility about 85 miles north of Detroit will process 3 million pounds of milk each day.

Kansas City, Mo.-based Dairy Farmers of America says milk production in the area is steadily outpacing local plant capacity.

The DFA says in a statement that there will be at least 25 full-time positions at the facility as well as increased employment opportunities on member farms and in agriculture support industries.

The 33,000-square-foot plant initially will produce condensed whole and skim milk, as well as cream.
