OAKWOOD, Ga. (AP) — A California-based bakery announced Monday that it plans to expand its plant in northeastern Georgia and create more than 400 new jobs by 2016.
King's Hawaiian is spending about $100 million to expand its facility in Oakwood — which is about 50 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta, Gov. Nathan Deal said in a statement.
The company is doubling the size of its existing facility in Hall County and creating another 120,000 square-foot plant by next year, Deal said. The expansion is also expected to triple the facility's production capacity.
The company plans to fill most of the new positions between 2014 and 2015, King's Hawaiian CEO Mark Taira said.
"We have been able to hire terrific associates here and are impressed with local officials' ability to partner with business and to create win-win experiences for Georgia citizens and companies," he said.
The family-owned company was founded in 1950 and produces sandwich and hamburger rolls along with its signature round sweet rolls.
King's Hawaiian has been operating in Georgia since late 2011.
Food processing is an $11.1 billion industry in Georgia and King's Hawaiian is one of more than 600 food processing companies operating in the state, state officials said Monday.
