GARDINER, Maine (AP) — The owner of a Gardiner, Maine meat processing facility plans to build a slaughterhouse about three miles away.

The Kennebec Journal reports Northeast Meats' owner bought a lot from Gardiner at Libby Hill Business Park and plans to open by Sept. 15. The Gardiner City Council approved the purchase-and-sale agreement last week. The Kennebec Journal reports the proposed facility still needs planning board approval.

The facility would slaughter poultry and red meat. Northeast Meat will truck red meat to its building on Brunswick Avenue to be processed.

The Kennebec Journal reports the city will give back 50 percent of new tax revenue from the plant for seven years and 33 percent for the next 13 years, provided the revenue doesn't exceed the $146,250 purchase price.
