Toronto, Ontario — Del Monte Fresh Produce N.A. Inc. is opening its first Canadian processing plant in Oshawa, Ontario. As part of construction, Del Monte is installing a new wastewater treatment system, System HydroKleen™, ALTECH Technology System’s innovative Membrane Bioreactor (MBR).
System HydroKleen™ is designed to treat 40,000 gallons per day of wastewater from the fresh cut processing of 100,000 lbs. per week of fruits and vegetables. This MBR will treat regulated sewer discharge contaminants to below Region of Durham sewer bylaw limits, eliminating sewer surcharge penalties.
Altech was selected based on other successful installations, including a featured installation at Algoma Orchards in Bowmanville, Ontario. At Algoma, Altech installed System HydroKleen to treat the wastewater effluent from juice and apple processing, upgrading treated water to potable water standards for reuse in process equipment sanitation in compliance with Canadian Food Agency Inspection (CFIA) standards. This is the first, full scale industrial effluent wastewater treatment system in North America to produce a potable quality water for reuse in a food processing plant.
