IRWINDALE, Calif. (AP) — Ready Pac Foods Inc. announced that it is recalling of 702 cases of bagged spinach salad after federal investigators confirmed the presence of E. coli in a random sample test.
The Irwindale-based company said in its announcement Wednesday that no illnesses have been reported in connection with the Spinach Temptations line of six-ounce bagged salads it is recalling.
The recall applies to salad mixes with a July 4 use-by date and product code I1707B, IR127121 and to products with a July 8 use-by date and code I2007B, IR130373, the company said. The affected products were sold in California, Washington and Arizona.
A Ready Pac spokeswoman did not return a call seeking comment Thursday.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, whose investigators detected the bacteria, also did not return a call.
Spinach with the Ready Pac label was among dozens of brands pulled from store shelves in 2006 after federal authorities traced a nationwide E. coli outbreak to a San Juan Bautista processing plant that bags its spinach. Ready Pac also supplied the scallions suspected in an E. coli outbreak linked to Taco Bell that year.
E. coli is a potentially deadly germ that can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration and, in the most severe cases, kidney failure.
