MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — Animal rights activists are demanding criminal charges be filed against the owners of a Grand Isle slaughterhouse where infant calves were shown allegedly being abused in an undercover video.

Members of the group Green Mountain Animal Defenders and other activists gathered at the Statehouse at 11 a.m. Saturday to demand criminal charges in the investigation of the Bushway Packing Co. slaughterhouse.

The Humane Society of the United States late last month released video depicting days-old calves being dragged, kicked and repeatedly shocked with electric prods.

Cindy Maquire, chief of the criminal division of the Vermont attorney general's office, says both state and federal authorities are investigating.
