HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) — Despite a state law banning it, Kansas Livestock Commissioner George Teagarden says people are still bringing feral hogs into the state for hunting.

Teagarden says the animals are a nuisance that do serious damage to crops and pastures.

The Kansas Legislature passed a law in 2006 banning feral hog hunting. Since then, the state and federal government has been killing feral hogs from the air across south-central and eastern Kansas. The annual hunt from the air began Tuesday along the Oklahoma border.

The animals also are trapped throughout the year.

But Teagarden says he thinks people are still dumping the hogs in the state for hunting. Some investigations are under way, but no charges have been filed.
