PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pennsylvania Department of Health has confirmed a suspected outbreak of salmonella poisoning at a federal prison in the northern part of the state, which has reportedly sickened more than 500 inmates and guards.

The Health Department's director of communications, Christine Cronkright, tells The Associated Press that most of those sickened at the U.S. Penitentiary-Canaan in Waymart reported eating chicken fajitas last month.

Cronkright says a federal inspector is on his way to the facility, and that the prison's food service facility has been shut down pending cleaning and inspection.

Officials at the prison about 135 miles north of Philadelphia say nobody is available to comment on the situation.
