OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Federal officials say a western Nebraska meat business that's been exempt from inspection has broken the rules by selling too much uninspected meat to commercial customers.
On Tuesday, Nebraska's U.S attorney asked a federal judge to order Mark Gies and his Marky's Meat Market business in Gering to comply with meat inspection rules.
Prosecutors say the business exceeded the federal dollar limits on how much uninspected meat could be sold commercially in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. For instance, the business sold $204,513.37 of meat to non-household customers in 2008, when the limit was $56,900.
The phone number listed for Gies' business was not answered Wednesday morning.
Prosecutors did not immediately respond to a message.
