PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island health officials say a New York-based company has recalled 25-pound boxes of crushed red pepper because of a suspected link to a salmonella outbreak.
The Rhode Island Department of Health on Thursday announced the recall from Brooklyn-based Wholesome Spice because the pepper could be contaminated with salmonella. The organism can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, especially in young children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems
The recall applies to boxes of pepper that were sold from April 6 through January 20 in the Northeast. The pepper was not sold directly to consumers.
Wholesome Spice is one of the distributors that supplied pepper to Daniele Inc. in Rhode Island. The Burrillville-based meat company recently recalled pepper-coated salami because of a salmonella outbreak.
Health officials say the recall shows that the contamination came from outside Daniele's manufacturing plant.
