CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — President Hugo Chavez's government has seized control of a coffee processing plant.

Carlos Urbina, a legal adviser for the company Fama de America, says the takeover occurred after negotiations broke down over trying to set a sales price for the plant.

Chavez ordered Fama de America nationalized last year. It is unclear whether the company will be compensated.

Urbina told Union Radio on Tuesday that government officials appointed a new board of directors at the coffee plant in the state of Carabobo.

During more than a decade in power, Chavez's socialist government has taken over dozens of businesses to expand state control over the economy.

Critics say the government takeovers violate private property rights.
