MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — The co-owner of a defunct Vermont slaughterhouse who is wanted on animal cruelty charges has been arrested in New York, near the Canadian border.

The Vermont attorney general's office says 51-year-old Frank Perretta of Grand Isle was arraigned Friday in St. Lawrence County as a fugitive from justice and released on $2,000 bail.

Bushway Packing Inc., was shut down Oct. 30 amid allegations stemming from a Humane Society of the United States undercover video showing calves being kicked and poked with electric prods.

A former slaughterhouse worker, 37-year-old Christopher Gaudette, of Grand Isle, has pleaded not guilty to animal cruelty charges.

A home telephone number could not be found for Perretta. It's unclear if he has a lawyer representing him.
