SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — Sioux City is getting a $2 million federal grant to help cover the cost of demolishing a former meatpacking plant and redeveloping the site.

KCAU-TV says Wednesday that the city's application for an Economic Development Administration grant was approved. The John Morrell & Co. pork processing plant is being torn down as part a plan to redevelop the area into a business park. The subsidiary of Smithfield, Va.-based Smithfield Foods closed the plant in April 2010, eliminating over 1,400 jobs.

Global Foods Processing Inc. is expanding its operation in Sioux City with a new plant on the former Morrell site. Global Foods will be the first tenant in the new business park. The company, which employs 175 workers in Sioux City, says the expansion will add nearly 200 jobs.
