BALTIMORE (AP) — A Delaware poultry processor says it is contesting a $1 million fine for safety violations at a plant on Maryland's Eastern Shore.
The fine announced Friday against Harbeson, Del.-based Allen Family Foods is the largest by a Maryland Occupational Safety and Health unit for a single inspection or investigation.
The company said Monday that the citation doesn't accurately reflect its safety record, and believes it is the result of a more aggressive enforcement policy by state regulators.
The inspection was in response to a December incident at a Hurlock processing plant where an employee was injured while reaching beneath an unguarded conveyor belt. The Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation issued four citations alleging 51 violations.
