EMPORIA, Kan. (AP) — The Tyson Foods plant in Emporia has announced plans to reduce its work force by 60 to 80 people.

Tyson spokesman Gary Mickelson said the layoffs are expected this week. He said the total work force will drop to about 900 people.

Mickelson said the primary reason for the cuts is improved efficiency at other Tyson plants, which has meant less work for the Emporia plant.

The Emporia Gazette reported people being laid off will be encouraged to apply for openings at other Tyson locations.

Tyson closed its slaughter operation in Emporia, cutting about 1,400 jobs at the Emporia plant in January 2008. The work force was reduced from about 2,400 to 1,000 at that time.
