MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — General Mills Inc. said Thursday that one year into the effort, the company is meeting its goals of reducing sugar in cereal advertised to children.

The maker of Lucky Charms, Trix and Cocoa Puffs announced plans at this time last year to cut the sugar in 10 of its cereals to single-digit grams of sugar per serving.

The company didn't provide a timeline for achieving those reductions at the time, but it said Thursday that it has reduced sugar in those cereals by 8 percent, on average, in 2010.

Shipments of Big G cereals advertised to children will have 10 grams of sugar or less per serving by the end of the year.

This builds on earlier efforts by General Mills to cut sugar in its foods as demands from consumers, health advocates and regulators build for healthier products.
