tax crusader Grover Norquist is supporting a Maine bill that aims to increase the amount of solar power generated in the state.

The founder of Americans for Tax Reform says in a letter to the Legislature's energy committee that the bill would provide stability to the solar power market without shifting the costs of maintaining the electric grid to other electric consumers.

He said the bill is a "free-market-oriented" solution compared to current polices.

Proponents say the bill could increase solar power in the state tenfold.

The bill is a compromise between the state's power companies and rooftop solar installers. It has run into opposition from Republican Gov. Paul LePage and GOP lawmakers.

Norquist is the creator of an anti-tax pledge that nearly every Republican in Congress has signed.
