FLORENCE, Ariz. (AP) — An Arizona utility company is planning to build a 40-megawatt solar plant in Pinal County.

The Casa Grande Dispatch reports (https://bit.ly/1ZWsruT ) that the Pinal County Planning and Zoning Commission has approved an Arizona Public Service Co. plan to construct and operate a 623-acre solar power plant.

APS director of solar generation Jim Piotrowski told the commission the project would only use 340 acres. He says the rest of the space will be undisturbed as part of APS' plan to protect wildlife.

Piotrowski says the solar plant would supply power for 10,000 homes. APS hopes to begin providing power around February 2017.

Piotrowski told the commission APS may sell power to California or Nevada in winter months and may need to buy electricity from others.
