NEVILLE ISLAND, Pa. (AP) — A Pittsburgh-area coke plant has agreed to upgrade its pollution control equipment and pay a $300,000 fine.
The agreement between the Shenango Inc. plant on Neville Island and the Allegheny County Health Department was announced Tuesday. The plant is owned by DTE Energy Services of Ann Arbor, Michigan, which says it will spend just over $1 million on new pollution control equipment. DTE bought the plant in 2008.
The plant has been the subject of a number of pollution agreements over the past two decades. In 2012, the company agreed to pay $1.75 million in a federal settlement over persistent air and water pollution violations.
The plant processes 1,500 tons of coal per day to produce coke, a fuel used to make steel. About 165 people work there.
