KILLDEER, N.D. (AP) — State health officials have ordered a facility in western North Dakota that handles radioactive material to cease operations immediately.
The state's Department of Health on Thursday said it issued an emergency order to secure the Killdeer facility operated by Dyad Environmental, LLC.
The order alleges inspections earlier this month revealed various safety violations including the lack of a qualified radiation safety officer on staff.
The department says the company must cease all operations at the plant and allow state inspectors to verify compliance with the order.
The facility handles radioactive filter socks, a byproduct of the oil industry. The filter socks bear technologically enhanced, naturally occurring radioactive material, commonly referred to as TENORM.
