LAS VEGAS (AP) — NV Energy is planning to close three of its Reid Gardner coal-fired power plants this year and completely end the use of coal power plants by 2019.
The company filed its proposal Thursday with the Nevada Public Utilities Commission.
NV Energy plans to make up for the lack of coal power by acquiring two existing gas-generated plants in Southern Nevada and two solar farms, including one planned on the Moapa Paiute reservation and an array on Nellis Air Force Base.
The move was applauded by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who had called for the utility company to close Reid Gardner during a 2012 speech.
The Nevada Legislature passed a bill in 2013 directing NV Energy to move away from coal and seek out other energy options.
