TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas officials are waiting to see how the federal government plans to regulate greenhouse gas emissions only days after the state signed off on a new, $2.8 billion coal-fired power plant.
The head of the Environmental Protection Agency planned to announce the new regulations Monday in Washington. Administration officials have said the rules would give states goals for reducing emissions but allow flexibility in meeting them.
Heat-trapping greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide are tied to climate change. Kansas doesn't regulate such emissions, but a state law taking effect in July will allow the secretary of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment to set rules.
KDHE Secretary Robert Moser gave the go-ahead Friday for Sunflower Electric Power Corp. to build the new coal-fired power plant in southwest Kansas.
