COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio lawmakers are expected to quickly take action on legislation intended to limit the impact of federal plans to cut carbon dioxide emissions from power plants by 30 percent by 2030.
The rule announced Monday by the Environmental Protection Agency is a key part of President Barack Obama's plans to reduce pollution linked to global warming.
There's been opposition from some states that rely heavily on coal. Ohio gets 70 percent of its electricity from coal.
The proposal would give states years to submit plans to cut power plant pollution.
A bill with bipartisan support would require any such plan from Ohio to protect electric affordability and reliability and to minimize effects on industrial, commercial and residential consumers. A legislative committee is scheduled to vote on the measure Tuesday.
