BLAIR, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska utility that owns the troubled Fort Calhoun nuclear power plant wants to show off the progress that has been made toward preparing the plant to restart.
The Omaha Public Power District plans to give media tours of the plant Tuesday on the eve of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's next public meeting about the plant.
OPPD officials say they've made significant progress, and they believe the plant 20 miles north of Omaha could be ready for restart before the summer heat. Fort Calhoun has been shut down since April 2011.
NRC spokeswoman Lara Uselding says the utility has addressed less than half of the more than 450 items on the restart checklist for the plant.
Regulators say they won't let the plant restart unless they're confident it is safe.
