FULTON, Ark. (AP) — Southwestern Electric Power Co. has won an award for its coal-fired electric generation plant in Hempstead County.
SWEPCO said Monday that the plant is operating at greater efficiency than the company envisioned.
The award citation from Power magazine notes that SWEPCO had to overcome a number of legal challenges to win clearance to build the plant. The company also had to satisfy utility and environmental regulators.
Environmental groups and nearby landowners sued to try to block the plant but reached a settlement with SWEPCO.
Several other utilities co-own the plant at Fulton with SWEPCO.
