Alberta's energy regulator will resolve a dispute in January between Nova Chemicals and Quicksilver, an energy firm focused on unconventional gas resources, over access to the Canadian province's pipeline system that could impact ethane supplies to Nova's petrochemicals plants. Quicksilver has applied to build a connecting line to Alberta's Trans-Canada pipeline system upstream of Nova's Joffre, Alberta, petrochemicals complex. Quicksilver plans to ship coal-bed methane (CBM) on the system, says company spokeswoman Doreen Rempel. Shipping methane on the system may impact quality and volume of ethane supplies available to Nova at Joffre because methane has no ethane content. Therefore, Nova is opposed to Quicksilver's application, says Rempel. Nova has no guaranteed right that would ensure that the gas shipped on the pipeline system is always of a quality and volume yielding a high ethane content, she added.
