Are You Really Prepared? Survey Says...

Five years after 9/11 and one year after Hurricane Katrina, most chemical industry professionals feel they are prepared to handle a disaster, with 83 percent reporting that their disaster response plans are good, very good or excellent.

Five years after 9/11 and one year after Hurricane Katrina, most chemical industry professionals feel they are prepared to handle a disaster, with 83 percent reporting that their disaster response plans are good, very good or excellent. However, while the chemical industry ranked highest in disaster preparedness among six private sector industries, nearly one in four professionals responsible for disaster preparedness say they have never conducted a disaster response exercise. The findings are part of a survey commissioned by the National Emergency Response & Rescue Training Center. The survey found 87 percent of chemical industry respondents have updated disaster response and recovery plans within the past year, but 11 percent do not train employees on the plans and 23 percent have never conducted an exercise to assess the effectiveness of their plans. Most experts recommend conducting an exercise at least once a quarter.
