METROPOLIS, Ill. (AP) — Federal regulators have outlined what safety measures must be in place at a southern Illinois plant that helps make nuclear fuel before it is allowed to resume operations.
The (Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan (https://bit.ly/VakQgu) reports the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has given Honeywell clarified directives involving upgrades at the Metropolis plant, where more than 200 workers are employed.
Uranium-conversion operations at the site have been shut down since May after regulators ordered Honeywell to make the site able to withstand an earthquake or tornado. The NRC also wants the company to revise its emergency response plans to natural disasters.
Honeywell says it is cooperating in making the changes, believing they could take nine months to a year to complete.
