Power Restored Following Diesel Plant Fire

Power has been restored to a remote Labrador community following a fire earlier this week at a diesel generating plant, a spokeswoman for Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro said Friday.

BLACK TICKLE, N.L. — Power has been restored to a remote Labrador community following a fire earlier this week at a diesel generating plant, a spokeswoman for Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro said Friday.

Merissa Wiseman said electricity was restored around 10 p.m. Thursday after crews completed repairs to one of three generator units damaged in the fire.

The plant was shut down after the blaze broke out Wednesday, leaving about 100 customers in the island community without power.

Wiseman said a mobile generating unit was expected to arrive later Friday on a coast guard icebreaker, depending on ice conditions.

"Crews will take a couple of hours to connect the unit to the grid and that will provide back up power while they do repairs on the remaining two units," said Wiseman.

She said intermittent power outages could occur over the next several days as crews continue to make repairs to the plant.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

"They (crews) have been so focused on trying to get that unit up ... so we don't have word yet on the exact cause of the fire," Wiseman said.
