Palisades Nuclear Plant Shut Down for Repair

The Palisades nuclear plant in southwestern Michigan has been shut down to repair what its operator describes as a small leak in a water tank.

COVERT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — The Palisades nuclear plant in southwestern Michigan has been shut down to repair what its operator describes as a small leak in a water tank.

A statement from the plant on the Lake Michigan shore near in Van Buren County's Covert Township says it was safely removed from service on Tuesday night for the repair to the safety injection/refueling water tank.

The tank holds up to 300,000 gallons of water that's the source for flooding the reactor cavity during refueling outages. It's also the source for the Safety Injection System at the plant owned by New Orleans-based Entergy Corp. to remove heat from the reactor's core for extended time periods.

Palisades says it had been monitoring the leak in recent days. No timeline was given for repairs.
