Huntsman Corp. has commissioned engineering design studies to increase the size of its Geismar plant, to take advantage of cheap natural gas from shale formations.

The plant makes methylene diphenyl diisocyanate that is used in making polyurethanes, whose polymers are used in everything from cars and construction to refrigerators and shoes.

The Advocate reports (bit.ly/MG8k4A) Huntsman did not disclose the size of the possible expansion.

Huntsman Polyurethanes operates the MDI facility in Geismar.
