Audit Finds Fraud in Energy Grant Program

Florida's energy program has cancelled $2.45 million in grants after an audit uncovered evidence of possible fraud and a bankruptcy.

Florida's energy program has cancelled $2.45 million in grants after an audit uncovered evidence of possible fraud and a bankruptcy.

Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam said Tuesday his department is working with federal and state law enforcement agencies on criminal investigations of two terminated grants totaling $2.26 million due to indications of potential fraud.

Four grants totaling $198,000 were canceled because the recipient was found to be undergoing bankruptcy procedures.

The state's energy program provides grants to businesses, local governments and other organizations for projects promoting solar and other renewable energy as well as energy conservation and efficiency. The program was transferred from the governor's office to the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services last year.

The audit also found other shortcomings including missing or insufficient documentation in the grant program.
