DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — Some neighboring landowners say they'll oppose rezoning of agricultural land so a $1.5 billion fertilizer plant project could be built in eastern Iowa's Scott County.
The Quad-City Times reports (https://bit.ly/Nh04pF) that the 318-acre site between Walcott and Davenport is among the sites being considered by Iowa Fertilizer Co. The company is a subsidiary of Egypt-based Orascom Construction Industries.
The other sites include one in southeast Iowa's Lee County, a site near Pekin, Ill., and one near an Orascom facility in Beaumont, Texas.
Fertilizer made at the plant would be sold in Minnesota, Nebraska, Iowa and Illinois.
Dorothy Schwartz owns land that borders the Scott County site. She opposes the rezoning, saying it would be a shame to put heavy manufacturing on such good farming land.
