VA Town Reaffirms Approval of Coal-Fired Plant

A utility's plan to build a $5 billion coal-fired plant in Dendron has been reaffirmed by the Town Council.

DENDRON, Va. (AP) — A utility's plan to build a $5 billion coal-fired plant in Dendron has been reaffirmed by the Town Council.

Media outlets report that the council unanimously approved land-use changes for the 1,500-megawatt plant on Monday. Council members also approved a conditional-use permit.

The council originally approved Old Dominion Electric Cooperative's plan to build the plant in February 2010. But a Surry County judge ruled in a lawsuit filed by several residents that the vote was invalid. The November 2011 ruling said the town didn't make it clear in public notices that council members would be voting on final approval for the plant.

The plant still faces a long list of environmental approvals.
