Senators OK Resolution on Hydraulic Fracturing

South Dakota's Senate has passed a resolution that urges Congress to leave hydraulic fracturing regulation in state hands.

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota's Senate has passed a resolution that urges Congress to leave hydraulic fracturing regulation in state hands.

On Tuesday, the Senate passed it 32-3. The House voted to adopt the resolution 50-16 last week.

Hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking," is a method of natural gas extraction that involves pumping millions of gallons of water, sand and chemicals underground at high pressures to crack rocks and release gas flows.

Opponents of the procedure say wastewater from the process can contaminate water supplies if not treated or disposed of properly.

The passed resolution has no binding force of law.
