All OK after Leak at Fertilizer Plant

A leak at the Koch Nitrogen fertilizer plant happened while a construction crew was demolishing an out-of-service line and a small release of ammonia occurred.

FORT DODGE, Iowa (AP) — A company spokeswoman says a leak at the Koch Nitrogen Co. fertilizer plant in Fort Dodge happened while a construction crew was demolishing an out-of-service line and a small release of ammonia occurred.

Katie Stavinoha (STAV'-in-ah) says it happened about 4 a.m. Friday and the plant was evacuated. She says a contractor watching the demolition suffered some "discomfort" and was taken to a hospital, where he was evaluated and released.

Stavinoha says some residual ammonia in the line was released when the line was demolished. She says the release was stopped and plant was secured and everything "is fine."

Koch Nitrogen is part of Koch Industries Inc. It owns the plant in Fort Dodge and terminals in Fort Madison, Marshalltown, Washington, Garner and Sergeant Bluff.
