MONTGOMERY, Ala. (September 19, 2011) – In response to the devastating tornadoes that swept through Alabama this spring, Monsanto Company announced a donation of $50,000 to aid in tornado relief efforts.
The donation will help aid cleanup and rebuilding efforts in agricultural communities as a part of the Alabama Forestry Foundation.
“Our hearts go out to those who have been deeply affected by this disaster,” said Dion McBay, Monsanto Southern regional business director. “I grew up in Alabama and I’m proud to call it home. It is my hope that Monsanto’s $50,000 donation can do its part to help devastated communities rebuild and get farmers back to what they do best – feeding America.”
Alabama’s row crop, poultry and cattle farmers were significantly impacted by the deadliest tornadoes to hit the United States since 1925. Farmers suffered considerable damage to their farms including building structures blown away, debris in fields, loss of crops as well as cattle and chicken losses.
“The tornadoes that touched down in Alabama caused irreparable damage to the homes and livelihood of many of the state’s farmers,” said John McMillan, commissioner of Alabama Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. “The contribution from Monsanto provides much needed financial support as farmers continue to work to rebuild and recover.”
