Manufacturers: House Passage of Tariff Bill A Positive Step Forward for Free Trade Agreements
09/07/11 - National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) Vice President for International Economic Affairs Frank Vargo issued this statement following House passage of the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) bill:“Today’s action in the House to pass the GSP legislation is a positive step toward advancing U.S. competitiveness and trade leadership. It also moves us closer to passing the three pending free trade agreements with Colombia, Korea and Panama. With each day that goes by without passage of the agreements, manufacturers are losing important market share to overseas competitors that only gets more difficult to get back.
Manufacturing has been a bright spot in the economic recovery, but has significantly slowed in recent months. Passing the free trade agreements will provide a boost to manufacturers and create jobs. Manufacturers urge Congress and the Administration to continue moving forward on the path laid out in August for passing the agreements. We can no longer afford to sit around and wait to move forward, the time to act is now.”
