EPA Fines Gold Mine $105,000

Federal environmental regulators say a company with a gold mine has agreed to pay a $105,000 fine for failing to correctly report toxic chemical releases from 2005 to 2007.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Federal environmental regulators say a Japan-based company with a gold mine in northern Nevada has agreed to pay a $105,000 fine for failing to correctly report toxic chemical releases from 2005 to 2007.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says Jipangu International Inc. failed to submit timely and complete reports about the pollution management at its Florida Canyon Mine and Standard Gold Mine processing facility near Imlay.

EPA Regional Administrator Jared Blumenfeld said from San Francisco on Wednesday there's no evidence the mine's violations posed any immediate health or safety risks at the site about 50 miles west of Winnemucca.

But he says the cyanide, lead, mercury and other chemicals involved in the processing of the gold there have the "potential to pose a danger to employees, the surrounding community and the environment."
