Tyson Foods Inc. named a former executive at Dow Chemical to its board Friday.

Kathleen Bader was also CEO of NatureWorks LLC from 2004 to 2006. She had spent more than 30 years at Dow before moving to NatureWorks, formerly a joint venture of Dow and Cargill, to change it from a research-based organization to a commercial business. NatureWorks makes fibers and packaging materials from renewable materials such as plants.

Bader, 60, also served for seven years under President Bush on the Homeland Security Advisory Council. She was a director at Halliburton Co. from 2007 to 2008.

John Tyson, the board chairman and former CEO, said in a statement that Bader was chosen for her experience in leadership, commodities and international business. Bader has lived abroad twice, the company said.

John Tyson's father, Don Tyson, had been on the board for nearly 60 years but passed away in January at age 80. Bader's appointment brings the number of board members back to eight.
