LINDON, Utah (AP) — A steel worker has been critically injured at a plant in Lindon, Utah, after a 25-ton steel girder hit him.

The Daily Herald of Provo reports (https://bit.ly/u5Umd4) the accident happened when the girder fell Tuesday night.

Lindon Police Chief Cody Cullimore (CULL'-ah-more) says the man has several broken ribs, damaged vertebrae and possibly a punctured lung. The injuries are not life-threatening.

Cullimore says the man was transported by medical helicopter to the University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City.

Cullimore says the worker would likely have been killed if the girder had landed on top of him.

The steel girders are being manufactured to support bridges along Interstate 15 as part of a $1 billion reconstruction project.
