CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — The U.S. Chemical Safety Board has approved the final version of a report on a series of accidents at a DuPont chemical plant in Belle in January 2010.
Agency spokesman Daniel Horowitz tells The Charleston Gazette (https://bit.ly/nl89lW) that the final version doesn't reflect major changes in conclusions or recommendations.
The report was approved 4-1 Tuesday.
It says DuPont engineers didn't build a safety enclosure to prevent workers from breathing highly toxic gas at the plant because they believed the $2 million project would set a precedent for safeguarding other hazardous materials. The board cited the company's 1988 cost-benefit analysis.
A worker at the Belle plant died after inhaling a lethal dose of phosgene. The board says 58-year-old Carl Fish likely wouldn't have died had the enclosure been built.
