NIIGATA, Japan, Feb. 26 (Kyodo) — Smoke was detected in a building housing heat-exchange equipment at a non-operational reactor at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant late Saturday evening, Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Sunday.
There are no reports of fire or radiation leaks at the No. 5 reactor, according to TEPCO, the operator of the plant.
No fuel remains in the reactor, which has been undergoing a scheduled checkup since late January, the utility said.
Operation of the No. 6 reactor at the plant will be suspended on March 26, leaving no reactors online in the TEPCO service area in the wake of the nuclear crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant.
