MIDLAND, Mich. (AP) — Dow Chemical Co. and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency have signed an agreement for cleaning up a three-mile stretch of the Tittabawassee River near the company's Midland facilities.
Project manager Diane Russell tells The Saginaw News (http://j.mp/tz7MJg ) that the cleanup will start next year. The company and agency approved the plans last Wednesday.
Last summer, federal regulators sought public reaction to the $5.75 million cleanup plan for six locations in the Tittabawassee River.
The targeted areas are contaminated with dioxins and a variety of other chemicals. They are in a highly industrial segment of the river with no green space or houses.
The plan includes several cleanup methods in different places, including placing clean material over polluted sediments, installing containment systems and dredging.
