Airgas Inc. said Tuesday it signed a contract to build an air-separation unit to supply gases to a silicon manufacturer in Tennessee.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Airgas said it will supply nitrogen to Hemlock Semiconductor LLC, which is building a $1.2 billion facility to make silicon for semiconductors and solar cells. Dow Corning Corp. is a major owner of Hemlock.

The new Airgas plant will be on Hemlock property in Clarksville, Tenn. Airgas said it would also supply nitrogen and other gases to other businesses in the region.

Shares of Airgas gained 22 cents to $64.85 in regular trading, then rose another 25 cents to $65.10 in extended trading after the announcement.
